Automated Logistics for small Orders

Project Motivation

The customer service is Würth Elektronik eiSos' flagship division, especially the free sample supplies to the developers. Since 2016, the electronics expert has had a sophisticated logistics centre in Waldenburg, Germany that allows it to reach consumers even faster and more efficiently. Due to strong sales growth in recent years, Würth decided to expand their existing warehouse in the course of a modernisation project and double the capacity of the order fulfillment system.

SOLUTION & MATERIAL FLOW

GOODS RECEIPT & STORAGE

As soon as the goods arrive at the logistics centre, they are loaded onto the conveyor system in the goods receiving area – either directly in cartons or repackaged in totes. Between the zone in front of the shuttle and the workstation areas, there is a central high-performance distributor loop that distributes the packages to picking, packaging and warehouse.

Before the goods are fed to the shuttle warehouse with six lanes, the automatic measurement takes place in order to generate an optimal occupancy pattern and maximise storage capacity.

ORDER PICKING & SHIPMENT

This takes place at ten order-picking workstations (GTP). In the empty tote buffer, all totes that are emptied during order picking are distributed to six lines and stacked. Downstream of the packaging area, the routing of the goods terminates at two shipment routes

HIGHLIGHTS

SCALABLE SYSTEM

Even in advance, two expansion stages were taken into account to ensure sufficient room for growth. In mirroring the existing system, all interventions and adaptations were able to be carried out in tight time windows outside business hours.

ERGONOMIC GOODS-TO-PERSON WORKSTATIONS

More efficient order picking, including for small order quantities, was achieved through the use of ergonomic goods-to-person workstations. This is reflected in the high level of customer orientation that distinguishes Würth Elektronik eiSos. The company's trademark is free sample supplies to developers.
